The industry is booming as evidenced by the sharp rise in revenue in the past few years. In 2009 for example, the hotel industry as a whole was worth $395 billion US dollars and by 2011 that figure had increased to $457 billion US dollars.
Europe and Asia dominate as the regions with the most filled rooms holding a 68% occupancy rate.
Asia is the region to watch though as the average room rate in this region is a little over $115 US dollars compared to the average room rate in the Africa and Middle East region which stands at a little over $165 US dollars, the most expensive globally.
