11th December 2024: Here are some of the stories that caught our attention over the week with some of our takeaways.
2040 Baseline, Boom or Bust: A thought provoking report by GBTA and CWT looking at the future scenarios for the business travel and meetings & events industry. It identifies key megatrends shaping the sector, including sustainability goals, technological advancements, evolving work models, and demographic shifts. It presents three distinct scenarios of Base, Boom, and Bust.
The Middle Road: Business travel keeps growing steadily. We’ll see more selective travel, with companies being pickier about who goes where and why. Virtual meetings handle the day-to-day stuff, while face-to-face meetings become more strategic.
The Big Boom: Think massive growth. Better tech actually leads to more travel (plot twist!), and everyone’s flying around on eco-friendly planes. The catch? It’ll all need to be super sustainable.
The Bust: Travel takes a nosedive. Between amazing virtual reality tech and tough environmental rules, people just don’t move around as much.
The big trends shaping all this:
- Green travel isn’t optional anymore – it’s make or break
- AI and tech will run the show behind the scene
- Remote work is completely changing why and how people travel
- Africa and Asia are where the action’s going to be
- Older workforce = different travel needs
- World politics could shake everything up
And what this could mean for companies? They’ll need to:
- Get smart about using their travel data
- Make friends with the right tech and travel partners
- Go all-in on sustainable travel
- Look after their road warriors better
