Six strategic imperatives for travel brands to thrive in the dynamic APAC market: This new report from Traveloka, one of South East Asia’s leading OTAs is based on a YouGov survey of nearly 12,000 respondents across nine APAC countries. The report identifies distinct traveller personas in Singapore, Indonesia, and Japan, highlighting varying motivations and destination preferences – and looks at emerging trends like technology adoption, sustainability concerns, and payment methods while, emphasising the significant role of price sensitivity and promotions.
While it is well known that the APAC region is not a homogenous market, the report throws additional light on some of the diverse motivations and preferences.
For example:
- Singaporean travellers primarily seek to rest and recharge, often preferring natural attractions and urban cities.
- Indonesian travellers are adventure-focused, driven by a desire to visit tourist attractions, especially natural ones.
- Japanese travellers seek cultural and wellness experiences, favouring historical sites, natural attractions, and wellness retreats.
And the six strategic imperatives for travel brands to thrive:
- Embrace Personalisation: Travel brands should use AI and data analytics to create tailored travel experiences and targeted marketing campaigns that resonate with local preferences.
- Use Promotions to Drive Exploration: Travel brands should design dynamic pricing strategies and promotions to encourage visits to under-explored destinations. Collaboration with local partners can help offer exclusive deals that promote cultural and natural heritage sites. This is particularly important given the price sensitivity of many APAC travellers.
- Build and Maintain Digital Trust: Prioritising cybersecurity and transparency in data practices is crucial. Brands should offer robust customer support and communicate security measures clearly to build and retain user trust. This is especially relevant in markets where digital platform adoption is high , but also in markets where trust in digital platforms is lower.
- Promote Sustainable Travel: Travel brands should offer competitive pricing for sustainable travel options and make them easily accessible. Educating consumers about sustainable choices through targeted content and campaigns is also important. This is necessary to overcome resistance to sustainable options due to cost and convenience concerns.
- Adapt Payment Options to Local Markets: A range of payment methods should be available, including local mobile wallets and cash options. Simplifying payment processes will enhance user convenience and satisfaction. This is crucial because payment preferences vary significantly across the APAC region.
- Focus on Domestic Travel Opportunities: Brands should develop and market domestic travel packages that highlight local attractions. Emphasising safety, convenience, and unique local experiences in offerings is key. This is in line with the preference for domestic travel in many APAC markets due to cost and safety concerns.
