25th September 2024: Here are some of the stories that caught our attention over the week with some of our takeaways.
Market Report – APAC: All Eyes on India: Why the World is Watching: Tareq Bagaeen from Hotstats writes in the Hotel News Resource that India is far outpacing its neighbours in the South Asia region on growth in total GOP (Gross Operating Profit) margins. This appears to be driven by India’s impressive GDP growth rate of over 7% for the past three consecutive years.
India’s population is projected to reach 1.7 billion in just 30 years and this massive population, coupled with a growing economy and rising disposable incomes, is creating an enormous wave of new travellers that will require significantly more hotel rooms across the subcontinent.
There seem to be opportunities across asset classes – while luxury hotels are leading the pack, the gap between luxury and full-service hotels in India is much smaller compared to other strong markets. Demand is widespread across all asset classes, making it both easier and more challenging for developers and operators to decide what to build and operate.
However current growth pattern in India may not be sustainable, as rate ceilings will eventually be reached – and there is a need for India to streamline bureaucracies, enhance financial transparency, and tighten policies to further stabilize the growth.
The Return of Chinese Outbound Travel: October Golden Week Signals a Strong Comeback & Trip.com reports second-highest quarterly profit, heightening global competition in the OTA Industry: Both these articles, one from Skift and the other from Travel Daily News speak to the resurgence of Chinese outbound travel and the intensifying competition among the major OTAs. The strong comeback of Chinese outbound travel, offers a significant opportunity for Trip.com which is best placed to capitalise on this demand. And the financial success of Trip.com, as reported in by Travel Daily News, signals the company’s ability to navigate the post-pandemic travel landscape and position itself as a formidable player in the global OTA industry.
Norwegian airline and Strawberry hotels create shared loyalty currency: Phocuswire reports that Norwegian airline and Strawberry hotels have partnered to create a shared loyalty currency, allowing customers to earn and redeem points across both travel providers. And in related news, Airport World writes that Norwegian airports are looking to transform airports with implementation of new technologies, such as biometric identification, self-service kiosks, and enhanced passenger flow management. I’d love to think there is a connection and that there is a unified drive to make travel and rewards more seamless.
Cogwheel Analytics Announces Launch of Hotel Digital Marketing Benchmarking Scorecard: Hospitality Net covers the launch of Cogwheel Analytics’ new Benchmarking Scorecard that empowers hotels to comprehensively assess their digital marketing performance by comparing key metrics against industry benchmarks, historical data, and their own portfolio. It claims to provide a holistic view, integrating data from various sources to deliver actionable insights that drive data-driven decision-making.
The Tricky World of Metasearch: Trivago’s Balancing Act: Triptease points out in their Hotel News Resource article that Trivago is testing a new way of displaying search results that could obscure direct hotel prices. The new format highlights a single advertiser (e.g. Booking.com) rather than showing multiple options, potentially making it harder for users to see the cheapest or best-value price.
The article calls out the delicate balancing act metasearch engines increasingly face – trying to increase the number of hotels advertising with them (to boost revenue) while also ensuring a simple, transparent user experience. And the question is whether metasearch’s stated “hotel-friendly” approach is no longer in play as it could make it more difficult for users to find and book directly with hotels.
